Royal Mail Propose Closure of Coventry Mail Centre

Royal Mail are seriously considering closing Coventry Mail Centre in favour of processing Coventry & Warwickshire’s Mail in a brand new Mail Centre to be located adjacent to Junction 15 of the M1 in the heart of Northamptonshire.

Our Branch feels that such a move would be disastrous for the company and for communities in the Coventry & Warwickshire area.

Royal Mail will be making their decision within the next few weeks as to whether their closure project goes ahead or not.  As a Union Branch we feel that as things stand the company intends to press ahead with its plans.  This is based on the fact that from day one the company has not been honest with us as a trade union, ignoring the national agreement on Mail Centre Agreement and being extremely secretive regarding their plans.

However the CWU Coventry Area Branch is not prepared to accept Royal Mail’s plans as they are quite clearly flawed.  If the Mail Centre in Coventry closes it won’t just be the employees who lose their jobs who will suffer but the residents of Coventry and the surrounding towns in Warwickshire who will lose out as well!

CWU Coventry Area Branch Coventry Needs A Mail Centre Campaign the Story So Far...

It has been over 1 year since Royal Mail first announced their plans to close Coventry Mail Centre.  Since that announcement was made the CWU Coventry Area Branch Campaign has collected over 17,000 signatures of opposition to Royal Mail’s proposals.  The branch also staged a March & Rally in Coventry City Centre, attracting approximately 400-500 participants from all around the UK.

Local Members of Parliament and Coventry City Council are behind our campaign 100% and have been working with the branch to persuade Royal Mail to change its mind and look at alternatives.  However despite overwhelming opposition to the closure plans so far Royal Mail are continuing to ignore the views of the local communities that will be affected and want to push ahead with their plans.

Despite the negative attitude of Royal Mail the CWU Coventry Area Branch will continue to try and persuade the business that they have got it all wrong with the way that they want to proceed.

What the Closure of Coventry Mail Centre Will Mean to the Residents of Coventry & Warwickshire...

The closure of Coventry Mail Centre is bad news for people who live in Coventry and Warwickshire.  At the moment all the mail that you post and all the mail you receive through your letter box is processed in Coventry Mail Centre.  If Royal Mail close Coventry Mail Centre and move that processing work to south of Northampton then you will see an impact on the service you currently receive, with mail collection times and delivery times likely to be affected due to the fact that the mail will need to travel to and from Northamptonshire to be processed.  Royal Mail is meant to provide a public service to the public.  Yet by closing Coventry Mail Centre they’re simply trying to absolve themselves of that responsibility to people living in Coventry & Warwickshire.  Don’t let them get away with it!  Visit the following pages to see more detail on what the closure will mean and what you can do about it.
