CWU Annual Conference 2008

CWU Annual Conference 2008 was held in Liverpool at the Liverpool Arena between Sunday 8th June 2008 and Friday 13th June 2008.

This year represented the first time that the CWU had held its Annual Conference in Liverpool.

The week’s conference agenda was as follows:

Sunday 8th June—Monday 9th June 2008 Rules Revision Conference

Monday 9th June— Tuesday 10th June 2008 General Conference

Wednesday 11th June—Thursday 12th June 2008 Postal Group Conference

Friday 13th June Section Conferences (Royal Mail Letters/Packages & Express/Clerical & Cash Handling)

Rules Revision Conference

Rules Revision Conference lasted a day and half and dealt with rule changes to the CWU National Rules.  The following motions reported on below represent the highlights of this particular conference...

Motion 5 was rejected by Conference.  This particular motion was seeking to exempt CWU Portability members from holding union positions in the CWU.  As portability membership, (that is CWU members that don’t come from traditional membership areas such as Royal Mail and BT), is a key growth area conference within the CWU, Conference felt it would be unfair that these members pay to be part of the union and then restricted from holding union posts.  Our branch rose to the rostrum in opposition during this debate.

Motion 20 was carried changing the duration of CWU Annual Conference from 6 days a week to 5 days a week.  This change will come into affect from next year onwards.

Motion 30 was accepted by the National Executive calling for a Rules Revision Conference every 5 years.  This will now replace the rule which currently states that a Rules Revision Conference will take place every four years.

Motion 58 was carried adding a new rule 10.5.3:  The results of all elections for the advisory committees of the Union that are voted upon by the Branches at conference will be published to the membership.

Motion 74 was carried amending rule 10.20 to include “each branch shall strive to ensure proportionality in its delegation” (to annual conference).
