Work for a company that doesn’t recognise a Trade Union?

In the UK anyone who wishes to be a member of a Trade Union is legally entitled to join one. 

It is illegal for your employer to penalise or prejudice against you for being a member of a trade union.

What do Trade Unions do?

 

Trade Unions protect and seek to improve their member’s terms and conditions of employment through negotiation and representation with employers.  This is done through a mixture of collective bargaining, (negotiating on behalf of a group of individuals), and through individual representation as well as lobbying the government and other organisations for changes to employment legislation.

Why should I want to join a Trade Union?

 

Think of it as an insurance policy!  Should you ever get into trouble at work you will have access to union advice and representation should the matter ever reach a disciplinary hearing.   As a trade union the CWU has experienced representatives who deal with procedures and UK employment law on a regular basis and consequentially are able to offer you an excellent level of representation.

 

If enough people in your workplace join the union, then all of you can begin to organise in your workplace,  meaning that together, the union and you, can strive towards getting recognition, which means that you and your colleagues will be able to have a say in your terms and conditions and your working environment!
